Energy efficient light bulbs keep their way into the mainstream market. One of the most recent examples is the Pali Momi Medical Center in Hawaii. This facility has replaced about 2300 fluorescents and compact fluorescents with LED technology, reducing their power company bill by over 50%!
While LED light bulbs come with an initial cost much in excess of CFLs, their lifetime accocunts for for it. LEDs may last so long as 100,000 hours, compared to compact fluorescents which lasts from 10,000 to 15,000 hours. The higher initial cost is usually paid off inside first year of usage, with each consecutive year being pure savings. A spokesperson to the Pali Momi Medical Center expects their investment in LEDs to be paid back by savings in around 15 months, with the savings continuing for decades.
Impressive savings are considered with the Honolulu airport, when a large retrofit of parking garage lighting is saving $100,000 30 days on electricity. If they conducted similar retrofits in other airport facilities, the savings can be incredible. LED light bulbs not just save the big bucks in the end, but they're better for the environment than compact fluorescents. CFLs contain mercury and emit UV rays, while LEDs contain no toxic chemicals and do not produce UV rays.
